Psychological Services for College Students
Leaving home for the first time tends to be a time of psychiatric instability for the best of us as we try to negotiate separating from our families of origin, making new friends, and discovering our course of study and career paths. While our college years can be a time of great joy and discovery, they also can be fraught with anxiety as we struggle to discover our unfolding identities. Balancing challenging coursework, new jobs, and learning time management are only some of the hurdles college students face. Dr. Miller has had the privilege of working with students from a variety of colleges in the Bronx including Bronx Community College, Lehman College, Fordham University, Monroe College, Mercy College, Yeshiva, Manhattan College, and Albert Einstein School of Medicine.
Individual Therapy (Face to Face)
Individual therapy involves speaking with a therapist one on one. The goal of therapy is to reduce the suffering that stems from problematic behaviors, erroneous beliefs, uncomfortable feelings, and unpleasant somatic sensations (things that you feel in your body). Therapy helps people to better define their goals and actualize their potential. Often, people enjoy therapy as it helps them to resolve barriers to peace, joy, self-esteem, and meaningful relationships and allows them to live fuller lives. Dr. Miller maintains a private practice at 2024 Williamsbridge Rd. Suites 3 and 4, Bronx, NY 10461. The Psychological Services team is available for therapy sessions via Zoom or telephone 7 days per week from 7am-10pm. Appointments typically last 45 minutes, however, at times, Dr. Miller will see people for 30 minutes depending on the need of each individual.
Remote Services
Remote psychological services refer to any psychological service that is not provided face to face in Dr. Miller’s office. The remote psychological services that MJM Psychological Services provides are Zoom therapy, and telephone therapy. A lot of people find remote psychological services desirable for many reasons:
They are ideal for the very busy person. Remote psychological services can take place anywhere and at any time, whether it be on weekends, early in the morning, on a lunch break, or late at night. The client does not have to commute to the session and does not have to worry about finding parking.
Remote psychological services also allows therapy to be accessible to people who otherwise might have a hard time getting there because their mobility is limited for one reason or another or because they live in a rural area where the therapists are few and far between.
At times remote psychological services are a good match for shy people. Some people feel less embarrassed or ashamed by communicating over either phone or video (rather than face to face). Often clients feel much more at ease knowing they are not out in the open. It is less intimidating. As a result, there is a tendency for greater self-disclosure. This is good for the therapeutic process.
The one weakness of remote services is that your Dr. or therapist would be unable to observe a person’s body language and facial expressions. When a person decides that he or she wants to take advantage of therapy by phone or video your Dr. or therapist has to rely totally on the ability of the person to express himself or herself in words. If someone feels that he or she is not good at doing this, remote therapy is probably not a good therapeutic modality for this person to use. He or she would probably benefit more from face to face therapy.
Remote psychological services are for people who are not in the midst of a serious crisis. If you have very complex problems it is best to see a therapist face to face. When you call or email to schedule an appointment, Dr. Miller can help you decide whether face to face therapy or remote services is more appropriate for you.
